Services were held Saturday for Carol Marie Romesha Phipps, 76, of Ceres. She died Aug. 31, 2008.
Born August 8, 1932 in Modesto to William and Ruth Romesha, Carol moved to Ceres when she was three years old, attended Ceres schools, and was a 1950 graduate of Ceres High School. She was an officer and member of several clubs and/or associations, and she was also the class valedictorian. Mrs. Phipps was a member of the First Church of Christ, serving as the church secretary for many years.
While a sophomore and member of the Ceres High Marching Band, she met Jimmie Dale Phipps, then a freshman who she would later marry. They were married on July 27, 1951. They moved to Fremont in 1958, where Jim was in the insurance business, and later, with Carol working beside him, they developed a very successful real estate business. Jim's health prompted the couple to move to an almond ranch in Hickman in 1970. A few years later they moved back to Ceres. Jim started the first Ceres cable TV franchise. In the late 1970s, Jim and Carol developed River Oaks Golf Course in Ceres. Carol ran the office and even worked behind the counter at times.
She leaves behind her husband of 57 years, Jim Phipps of Ceres; two children, Michael D. Phipps of Ceres and Janis M. Phipps of Hughson; six grandchildren, Jared Phipps of Australia, Jonathan Carmean and Dustin Phipps, both of Hughson, Kristen Phipps of Hickman, Lindsay Phipps of Modesto, and Amanda Phipps of San Luis Obispo; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Letha A. Cronan, and sons William H. Phipps, Douglas A. Phipps, and Robert L. Phipps.
Remembrances may be sent to Community Hospice, 4368 Spyres Way, Modesto, CA 95356.
