A memorial service was held Monday at Lakewood Funeral Home for Dirk "Dick" Van Konynenburg, 77, of Hughson. He died June 23, 2009.
Interment was at Lakewood Memorial Park.
Born Dec. 22, 1931 in Modesto to Dominicus and Ida Van Konynenburg, Dick was raised in Empire and attended Empire schools before graduating from Modesto High School in 1949. He married Joyce Elaine VandenBerg on Nov. 29, 1957 and enjoyed 52 years of marriage, farming and raising their five children in Hughson. Mr. Van Konynenburg served on the Hickman School Board for 12 years, and the Stanislaus County School Board for four years. He was a life member of the PTA, and was a life member of Veterans of Foreign War, president of Young Farmers of America, Farm Bureau, Blue Diamond Almond, Waterford Sportsman Club, the National Rifle Association, and ZAP. Dick served in the Korean Conflict.
He leaves behind his wife, Joyce Van Konynenburg of Hughson; his children, Gina Lechuga of Modesto, Dirk Van Konynenburg of Hughson, Gary Van Konynenburg, Katie Van Konynenburg of Modesto and Samantha Franscella of Waterford; his sister, Kathleen Kelly of New Jersey; and his grandchildren, Arja Lechuga, Aliesha Lechuga, Dirk Adam, Brittany Van Konynenburg, Bradley Van Konynenburg, Gabriel Van Konynenburg, Kacee Van Konynenburg, Zachary Van Konynenburg, Gerard Dominicus Van Konynenburg, Tessa Franscella and Sophia Franscella. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Gertrude Zehrung, brother Glenn Van Konynenburg and son Gary Van Konynenburg.
