Graveside services were held Friday at Acacia Cemetery in Modesto for Elsie Marie Clement Thornburg, 89, of Modesto. She died Oct. 24, 2009.
Born July 10, 1920 in Haleyville, Ala., to William and Mary Clement, Elsie's family moved to Modesto in 1921 where Elsie grew up and attended schools. The family moved to Hughson in 1935. They started two businesses - the father in grocery business, and the mother in clothing and general merchandise. Elise graduated from high school in 1938 and married Merle Thornburg in 1940. They were in the grocery business in Empire for 20 years.
She leaves behind her brother, Harold Clement of Bellingham, Wash. She was preceded in death by son Billy in 1963 and husband Merle in 2000 her husband.
