A memorial service was held at Monte Vista Chapel in Turlock for Ernest D. Howard, 80. He died Dec. 7, 2010 of cancer at his home with family and friends surrounding him.

Burial was at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Born May 30, 1930, Ernie attended Gratton School during the early part of his life. In his youth he contracted polio and battled pain for many years. Due to his illness, Ernest spent seven years in the hospital where he finished his elementary schooling. He then attended Denair and Hughson high schools. He furthered his education at San Jose State receiving his BA and teaching credential. He taught at Osborn School for over 30 years and served as a trustee on the Gratton School District Board for 12 years. Mr. Howard also farmed peaches and walnuts. He was a family man who greatly loved his family. When his kids were growing up he enjoyed attending their activities, such as ball games, concerts, and recitals. Ernest taught Sunday School and attended Monte Vista Chapel in Turlock. He enjoyed fishing, playing chess, and studying God's Word.

He leaves behind his wife, Dorothy Howard; five children, David Howard of Modesto, Jonathan Howard of Turlock, Eric Howard of Missouri, Nate Howard of Modesto and Sallie Wright of Denair; his sister, Joyce Messengale of Turlock; and 16 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by daughter Suzanne Schrader.
