Frances Lewis Klein, widowed in 1976 by husband and Hughson-based medical pioneer Paul E. Klein, died Dec. 13, 2009 in Modesto. The Hughson resident was 85.

No services were offered out of her wishes.

Born Feb. 12, 1924 in Springfield, Mo., to Frank and Margaret Lewis, Frances Jean Lewis came to El Cajon in 1926. She attended John Muir Grammar School for one year, then switched to the Training School at San Diego State College. There she skipped a grade and went on to Woodrow Wilson Junior High. In at high school in San Diego she met - and later married - Paul Klein. They both attended the University of Southern California and were married in Los Angeles in 1943. Fran graduated from USC with a major in bacteriology and a minor in chemistry. During World War II Fran worked at McCornack Army Hospital in Pasadena. She was involved in her husband's medical practice. They came to Hughson in 1949. Fran assisted in Cub Scouts and swim lessons. She earned her pilot's license.

Fran leaves behind son Steve Klein of Sacramento; three stepchildren, William Thomas Carson, III of Davis, Catherine Carson of Santa Monica, and Margaret "Peggy" Reis of Modesto; her brother, Jack; and six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, three stepchildren, and five step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul and brother Bob.
