A funeral was held Tuesday at Cunningham's Affordable Burial & Cremation Center for George Franklin Powell, 61, of Modesto. He died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004 at his home.

Burial will be at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella.

Born Jan. 22, 1943, Mr. Powell was a native of Trenton, Tenn., and lived in Modesto for one year and previously lived in Virginia a year, Kentucky 10 years and in Arizona. Mr. Powell was an outside plant engineer for a telecommunications firm and an associate at Kmart in Ceres. He was a member of the American Legion, Moose Lodge and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Powell enjoyed NASCAR racing, Western dancing and singing. He served in the Air Force from 1967-70.

He leaves behind his wife, Ima Jean Powell of Modesto; two children, Tyjuanh Martin of Brandon, Miss., and Scotty Powell Sr. of Booneville, Miss.; six stepchildren, Laura Johnson and Donna Gowen, both of Modesto, Shirley Lawless of Porterville, Mark Brennan of Escalon, Bob Wilson II of Soulsbyville and Kevin Wolf of Empire; his mother, Nell Powell of Savannah, Tenn.; two sisters, Nancy Doran of Savannah, Tenn., and Patsy Few of Jackson, Tenn.; and 21 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
