Services were held Saturday at Lakewood Memorial Home and concluded at the Sikh temple in Hughson for Harbans L. Chowdhary, 76, of Salida. The former Ceres resident died Feb. 14, 2008.

Born Jan. 1, 1932, Mr. Chowdhary was a native of Punjab, India, and immigrated to the United States in 1979. He resided in Ceres from 1980 to 1994 and then moved to Salida. While in India he was a school teacher. Mr. Chowdhary earned two masters degrees in English and History from Punjab University, India. He enjoyed learning and teaching. Mr. Chowdhary considered himself a historian who loved to read and kept current with world news, politics and world literature. He especially enjoyed reciting the works of Shakespeare and Wordsworth.

He leaves behind his wife of 44 years, Shanti Chowdhary of Salida; his two sons, Arun Chowdhary and Dr. Anil Chowdhary; his brother, Dr. Sarvjit Chowdhary; and three grandchildren, Amrit, Jessica and Akshay, all of Salida.
