A funeral was held Tuesday at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel for James Adalphie McCleskey, 88, of Modesto. He died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005 at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock.

Burial was at Patterson District Cemetery.

Born April 23, 1917, Mr. McCleskey was a native of Hall County, Ga., and had lived in Modesto since 1928 and previously lived in Wasco. He was a farmer for 71 years in the Westport community in rural Ceres. He was a member of the Pentecostal Church. Mr. McCleskey was a founding member of the Stanislaus County Farm Bureau, a former trustee of the Westport School, and a member of the Cling Peach Association and the Almond Growers Association. He enjoyed flying, baseball and dominoes.

Mr. McCleskey leaves behind two children, Arvada Beckwith and Amilda McCracken, both of Modesto; his brother, David H. McCleskey of Copperopolis; his sister, Merle Spiller of Angels Camp; and six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara McCleskey; and two brothers and two sisters.
