A graveside service was held Friday at Lakewood Memorial Park for James "Jay" Clinton Brown, 85, of Ceres. He died Dec. 29, 2008.

Born Oct. 21, 1923 in Ethel, Ark., Jay served in World War II as a driver /mechanic in the European Theater of Operations. He married Frances Louise Chandler on August 24, 1945. They moved to California in 1946 and he went to work for the Water Users Association as a Drag Line operator. They then moved to Yuma, Arizona to work in construction, the field he chose to remain in for the rest of his career. In 1983, Jay moved back to California and went to work for Swinerton & Walberg (now Swinerton Builders). He remained with Swinerton until his stroke in 1991, when he and Fran moved to Ceres.
Mr. Brown leaves behind his wife, Fran Brown of Ceres; his son, Jimmy Wayne; and eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 11 brothers, two sisters and son Garry Clinton Brown.
