A memorial service was held Friday in the Spring Crest Village gated community clubhouse in Turlock for Peter Canning, 84 of Turlock. He died on March 30, 2010 at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.

Born Sept. 5, 1925 in New Jersey, Pete a resident of the Modesto, Ceres, and Turlock areas for 82 years. He was a mechanic with Wilson Ford and Mercury, and then Dow-Hammond Trucks until his retirement. He and his wife also owned and operated Pete's Hobby Shop in downtown Modesto during the 1960s. In his earlier years Pete was a charter member of the Century Toppers auto club in Modesto, and enjoyed automobile and boat racing. He later enjoyed model aeronautics, Nascar, fiddling music, traveling, his family, and his dog Pepper. He was a member of the Elks, SIRS, and the Academy of Model Aeronautics.

He leaves behind his wife, June Canning of Turlock; three children, Michael Shively of Chico, Don L Shively of Turlock and Sandra Shively of Turlock; two grandchildren, David Shively and Kristen Souza of Turlock; and three great-grandchildren.
