A graveside service was held Tuesday morning at Lakewood Memorial Park for Roger Darrelle Sprague Sr., 54, of Modesto. He died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004 at Doctors Medical Center.

Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Born Sept. 7, 1949, Mr. Sprague was a native and lifelong resident of Modesto. He was a self-employed author for 10 years, and had owned Sprague Furniture Repair for six years. He also had been a correctional officer. He was a grandson of Florence Thompson, the woman whose image became known worldwide as "Migrant Mother" after it was taken by photographer Dorothea Lange at a pea-pickers camp in Nipomo in 1936. He enjoyed woodworking.

He leaves behind his wife, Oleta Kay Sprague of Modesto; six children, Roger D. Sprague Jr. of Modesto, Keith E. Sprague of Turlock, Timothy L. McCurdy of St. Helens, Ore., Jennifer Marie Sims of Vacaville, Amber Roseanne Pilgrim of Castro Valley and Frank E. McAllister of Stockton; his brother, Robert E. Sprague of Modesto; his sister, Sharon Coker of Riverbank; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son and his parents, Roger and Ruby Sprague, whose home was in Ceres.
