Services were held Monday at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel for Roma Thomas Teel, 86, of Ceres. He died Jan. 11, 2008 at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson, after complications from a Dec. 18 stroke.

Born Oct. 14, 1921 to Vina and Thomas J. Teel of Centrahoma, Okla., Mr. Teel served as an Army Staff Sgt. in the China Burma India Theater from 1943 through 1946. Following college he taught high school math and industrial arts at Purcell, Okla., from 1948 to 1952. While visiting family in this area in 1952 he obtained a teaching position. Roma was at Walter White Junior High in Ceres in 1952 and 1953; then to moved to Empire School as an industrial arts and seventh- and eighth-grade teacher, joining his wife who taught language arts and home economics. He continued his education at C.O.P. in Stockton, then became a vice principal, principal, and retiring as superintendent of the Empire district in 1980. Roma and Dora Teel (deceased 1977) were honored with the naming of the Teel Senior Elementary School on June 8, 1980.

Mr. Teel enjoyed gardening and liked growing many beautiful roses. He planted trees and watched them grow and bear fruit. He raised an ample crop of vegetables which he shared with family, friends and neighbors.

Mr. Teel and wife June were active for 18 years with the Big Valley Drifters chapter of Winnebago Itasca Travelers and were proud to be given an honorary membership. They were able to tour much of the country and western Canada in their motorhome.

He leaves behind his wife of 29 years, June Teel of Ceres; his stepson, Gary Thorn of Turlock; two step-grandchildren, Derek Thorn, of Turlock, and Amy Pulido of Livingston; and 6 great-grand-children. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dora Teel; his parents, brothers Ransom Teel and Elmer Teel, sister Lavada Brandon.
