Visitation will be at Eaton Family Funeral Home, 513 12th Street, Modesto, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday) for Sylvia Odessa Kindy, 78, of Turlock. The former Ceres resident died Sept. 13, 2008.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Ceres Memorial Park, 1801 E. Whitmore Ave.
Born May 9, 1930 in Bochita, Okla., to Calvin Luther Davis and Myrtle Letha Carlile Davis, Sylvia came to California in the early 1940s. She lived most of her life in Ceres before moving to Klamath Falls, Ore., 12 years ago. The last two months were spent in Turlock. Sylvia was an licensed vocational nurse/psych tech for 25 years at Stockton State Hospital. She worked a full time job during the night and went to school full time during the day to graduate at the top of her class as an LVN. She was 50 years old when she graduated from nursing school. Her family was proud of her ability to overcome obstacles and enjoy life in spite of losing her eyesight. She loved her family, traveling, researching genealogy, crocheting, doing crafts, listening to music and books on tape. Mrs. Kindy had a lifelong passion for pets.
Survivors include three children, Elizabeth Letha Ann Davis Henkel of Klamath Falls, Ore., Troy Calvin Kindy of Keizer, Ore., and Paul Kindy of Turloc; her sister, Gwen Mitchell of Klamath Falls, Ore.; and 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild expected in May. She was preceded in death by husband Ernest "Ernie" A. Kindy on Oct. 16, 2004.
