A funeral was held Monday morning for William "Bill" Lee Knowles, 78, of Hughson, at Bandy & Sons Funeral Home in Nortonville, Ky. He died Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock.

Burial was at New Salem Cemetery in Nortonville under the direction of Allen Mortuary.

Born Oct. 28, 1925, Mr. Knowles was a native of Onton, Ky., and lived in Hughson for eight years. He worked as a maintenance supervisor and was employed by Braddock and Logan Properties. Mr. Knowles previously was an area supervisor for Douglas Oil Co. and USA Petroleum; he also had worked for General Fireproofing. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific Theater, including the battles of Saipan and Tinian.

He leaves behind his wife, Joe Ann Knowles of Hughson; four children, Bill Knowles of Macon, Ga., Glenn Knowles of San Luis Obispo, Scott Knowles of Turlock and Melanie Root of Sacramento; four brothers, Darrell Knowles of Slaughters, Ky., Kenneth Knowles of Bowling Green, Ky., Robert Knowles of White Plains, Ky., and Roy Knowles of Mortons Gap, Ky.; his sister, Rita Edwards of Hopkinsville, Ky.; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother.
