Central Valley High School's varsity volleyball team quadrupled its 2007 win total this year.

The much-improved Hawks (4-10) finished in a three-way tie for fifth place in the Valley Oak League standings with Ceres High and East Union thanks in large part to the consistent play of Alyssa Long and Kayla Lolkus.

Both players were among the 20 named to the All-VOL team in a vote by the conference's coaches released last week.

Long and Lolkus made the all-league second team, along with Bulldog standouts Jamie Beck and Jode Johnson.

Alyssa starred at middle blocker during her first varsity season. The sophomore totaled 42 kills, 16 aces and 14 blocks in Central Valley's four league victories.

"It's a pleasant surprise," Long said. "I wouldn't have been recognized without my team."

Lolkus, a senior libero, tallied 33 digs and four aces against East Union and Weston Ranch.

Beck was honored after ranking third in blocks (26) and sixth in kills (68) in the VOL. The sophomore middle blocker also had 12 aces and eight digs.

Johnson, a junior middle blocker, ranked fourth with 21 blocks to go along with 39 kills, 44 digs and four aces. She made the VOL second team as a sophomore.
