CV tennis team extends unbeaten streak

The Central Valley High School girls tennis team surpassed its win total from last season this past week.

The Hawks routed host Manteca 12-3 on Thursday and improved to 2-0 in the Valley Oak Leagues standings. Central Valley players were in a jovial mood during the van ride home.

"They're a pretty confident bunch right now," Central Valley coach Todd Russell said. "They all expect to win."

Central Valley won all nine singles and two of four doubles matches.

In singles play, Melissa Gonzales defeated Erica Rice 6-1, Nicole Osborne 6-1 and Bernice Rosas 6-0.

Anna Polovin defeated Osborn 6-2, Rosas 6-1 and Rice 6-1.

Jessica Gutierrez defeated Rosas 6-3, Rice 6-4 and Osborn 6-1.

In doubles play, Jessica Rodriguez and Carissa Garcia defeated Lexi Ziackas and Morgan Salsedo 10-7. They lost 10-3 to Kristen Teicheira and Cassie Gause.

Erika Marmolejo and April Hernandez defeated Ziackas and Salsedo 10-5. They lost 10-5 to Teicheira and Gause.

Central Valley won five singles and three doubles matches en route to a 91/2-51/2 triumph over the Sierra Timberwolves on Tuesday, Sept. 11 in Ceres.

Gonzales defeated Mona Ballagan 6-3, Stacy Morris 6-2 and Michelle LeLaurin 6-2.

Polovin defeated Morris 6-4 and Ballagan 6-3. She lost 6-4 to LeLaurin.

Rodriguez and Garcia defeated Erica Sanchez and Donalyn Gallegos 10-7, and Tori Hedegard and Natalie Hutchison 10-3.

Marmolejo and Hernandez defeated Sanchez and Gallegos 10-5. They lost 10-8 to Hedegard and Hutchison.
