Ceres High's frosh-soph boys basketball team defeated West of Tracy 64-56 in the third-place game of the Johansen Tournament on Saturday in Modesto.

"I'm pleased," head coach Jim Pernetti said. "We did really well."

Nick Welsh poured in a game-high 24 points for the Bulldogs, who moved to 4-3 in preseason play.

Binder Atwal, Lucas Tevaseu, Jimbo Pernetti and Shannon Dinsdale contributed 13, 10, eight and seven points, respectively.

Welsh, Pernetti, Atwal and Tevaseu started.

Ceres High outscored West 41-27 in the final 16 minutes.

"We trapped and pressed in the second half instead of playing back," coach Pernetti said.

The Bulldogs lost 60-43 in semifinal action to the Golden Valley Cougars on Friday.

Welsh collected 15 points.

Atwal and Pernetti finished with 11 and eight points, respectively.

Golden Valley outscored Ceres High 21-6 in the closing eight minutes.

"The score looks worse than it was," Jim said. "We ran out of gas in the fourth quarter."

Ceres High edged host Johansen 52-48 on Thursday.

Atwal scored a career-high 28 points.

Welsh, Pernetti and Tevaseu added nine, five and four points, respectively.

CHS girls take second

Ceres High School's frosh-soph girls basketball team followed up its first-place showing at home with runner-up honors at the Atwater Tournament this past week.

The Bulldogs won two of their three games.

Sofia Luna was named to the all-tournament team.

Ceres High posted a 32-25 win over Atwater on Saturday.

Jessica Ellsworth led the Bulldogs with 11 points. Luna and Ashton Frampton added nine and six points, respectively.

Luna had 16 points and 10 rebounds in the Bulldogs' 33-21 rout of Kimball on Friday.

Ellsworth scored nine points.

Bethany Mazza tallied four points, five assists and four rebounds.

Ashton Frampton (four points) and Harveen Gill (six rebounds) also contributed.

Ceres High shot just 15 percent from the field and committed 30 turnovers en route to a 46-36 loss to Liberty Ranch on Thursday.

Luna collected 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Mazza had three points and four assists.

Frampton and Ellsworth scored six and three points, respectively.

Gill grabbed five rebounds.
