The Ceres Earthquakes under-13 competitive girls soccer team brought home first-place medals from the Modesto Ajax Fall Tournament, staged Sept. 28-29, at Mary Grogan Community Park.

Ceres topped Walnut Creek 3-0 in a penalty-kick shootout to claim the tournament title on Sept. 29.

"Everyone was nervous," head coach Roger Sandoval said. "It could have gone either way."

Yesenia Zuniga, Mixtly Vega and Amanda Calvo converted their penalty kicks.

Calvo sealed the victory when she booted the ball into the right corner of the goal.

"We practice PKs all the time at practice," Sandoval said. "I was confident we were going to make them."

Goalkeeper Emely Lopez blocked two of Walnut Creek's three PKs.

The two teams battled to a scoreless tie during regulation.
The Earthquakes also collected wins against the Modesto Ajax Premiere (6-0), San Francisco Seals (10-1) and Mantecal Futbol Red (4-3).

Ceres, No. 13 in the California North rankings according to gotsoccer.com, has compiled a 10-2 record since August.

The Earthquakes placed first with a 3-1 mark at the Silicon Valley Showcase.
