Girls swim team 1-1 in league

The Ceres High girls swimming team defeated Downey 133-46 in Ceres on Friday. The Bulldogs won nine of 11 events, including six individual and three relay.

"If you can field the event and they can't, you can bring in points for your team," said Ceres coach Sue Garcia.

The Bulldogs improved to 1-1 in the Central California Conference standings, while the Knights fell to 0-2 in league.

"We're going to get better as the season goes on," Garcia said.

Katie Griffith, Sarah Maher and Lauren Griffin were major contributors.

Griffith won the 200 IM in 2:30.41, 100 fly in 1:08.16 and 100 back in 1:15.41.

Maher won the 50 free in a personal-best 27.62 seconds. Maher had to finish the event in 27.7 seconds or less to qualify for the section meet.

"She's been trying for four years," Garcia said.

Griffin won the 100 free in 1:04.37.

Leslie Helm won the 100 breast in 1:23.12.

Farrell, Sarah Curtis, Gretchen Loftis and Maher won the 200 medley relay in 2:16.47.

Griffith, Amber Castino, Loftis and Maher won the 200 free relay in 1:54.44.

Maher, Loftis, Griffin and Griffith won the 400 free relay in 4:17.29.

Ceres also placed second seven times.

Amanda Arrollo placed second in the 50 free in 28.30 seconds and 100 free in 1:06.83.

Tristin Long placed second in the 500 free.

Kelli Farrell placed second in the 200 IM.

Christina Karras placed second in the 100 breast.

Kirena Duffell, Helm, Griffin and Arrollo placed second in the 200 medley relay.

Curtis, Duffell, Arrollo and Long placed second in the 200 free relay.
