CalHiSports unveiled its preseason All-Sac-Joaquin Section team on Aug. 13.

Central Valley High School senior Ja'Quan Gardner made the second team.

"We have the best running back around," said Jason McCloskey, second-year head coach of the Hawks. "I didn't create him. I inherited him."

Gardner was promoted to Central Valley's varsity team as a sophomore in 2011.

He rushed for a school-record 1,985 yards and 25 touchdowns. He was voted Western Athletic Conference Offensive MVP.

Ja'Quan gained 1,562 yards and scored 15 TDs his junior year.

He earned second-team, all-conference honors.

Gardner totaled 522 yards on the ground and 11 touchdowns in back-to-back victories against crosstown-rival Ceres High.

Ja'Quan will add to his program-record totals for rushing yards and touchdowns in 2013.

Central Valley fell one win shy of accomplishing a first last season-qualifying for the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.

The Hawks posted a 5-5 overall record and finished fifth in the Western Athletic Conference standings (2-4).

"I don't think about pressure," Gardner said. "I like to go out there and have fun. I don't have any individual goals. I just want to win."
