The members of Central Valley High School's varsity football program traveled to Manteca last week for a four-team scrimmage.

The host Buffaloes played host to the Hawks, Ripon Indians and Bret Harte Bullfrogs Saturday night at Gus Schmidt Field.

"It was Manteca and everyone else," Central Valley lineman Cristian Chavez said when asked which school fared the best. "They're a championship-caliber team. We did pretty well. We just started off slow."

Central Valley logged 12 minutes of both offense and defense against the Buffalos, Indians and Bullfrogs.

"We're started playing better as a team," Chavez said. "We limited our mistakes. It was pretty fun."

Manteca compiled a 9-1 overall record, placed first in the Valley Oak League standings (6-10) and qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs in 2010.

Central Valley finished 2-8 and 1-4 last season.

The Hawks will open the 2011 season at home this Friday. The non-league contest between Central Valley and first-year Gregori will be played at Bulldog Stadium. Kickoff set for 7 p.m.

"We should do pretty well against them because we're better than last year," Chavez said. "We're senior-loaded. We're not underestimating that team. That could lead to us not playing to our full potential."
