Ceres High enjoys success at WAC track & field finals

Ceres High School track and field standouts Verlis Smith and Fermin Esparza brought home a combined seven medals from the Western Athletic Conference Championships. The event was staged on May 5 at Mountain House.

Ceres High’s boys and girls track and field programs placed third and fourth, respectively, at the Western Athletic Conference Championships on May 5 at Mountain House.

Ceres High’s boys team totaled 69 points while finishing ahead of Beyer (67), Grace Davis (65), Pacheco (43), Los Banos (34) and Johansen (3).

Lathrop (111) and Mountain House (69) took first and second, respectively.

“I’m proud of how we did,” Bulldogs’ standout Verlis Smith said. “We competed.”

Smith placed first in the long jump and 100, and second in the 200.

He set personal records in the long jump and 100.

“There was some pressure,” Smith said. “That just makes me perform better.”

Fermin Esparza placed first in the 200, second in the pole vault and fourth in the 100.

He set a personal record in the 200.

Faiva Tuakalau placed fourth in the shot put and fifth in the discus.

He set a personal record in the shot put.

Dakota Adams placed fourth in the pole vault and ninth in the triple jump.

He set a personal record in the triple jump.

Daniel Baker placed seventh in the shot put and 14th in the discus.

Cesar Bolanos placed eighth in the 800 in a personal-best time.

Ricky Stanley placed eighth in the high jump, and 12th in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles.

Jacob Swanson placed 10th in the 300 hurdles and 11th in the 110 hurdles.

Yahir Ruiz placed 12th in the 800.

Eduardo Ortiz placed 12th in the 3,200 and 15th in the 1,600.

Thomas Lopez placed 14th in the shot put.

Jesse Ortiz placed 16th in the discus.

Tarrell Lee-Gill placed 16th in the long jump.

Nathan Martin placed 18th in the 1,600.

Daniel Rubio placed 19th in the discus.

Ceres High’s 4x100 relay team of Tarrell Lee-Gill, Fermin Esparza, Austin Munguia and Verlis Smith placed second.

Ceres High’s 4x400 relay team of Munguia, Cesar Bolanos, Yahir Ruiz and Jacob Swanson placed sixth.

Ceres High’s girls posted a team score of 34 while finishing ahead of Beyer (24.5), Pacheco (19), Johansen (10) and Grace Davis (8).

Mountain House (167), Lathrop (142.5) and Los Banos (86) took first, second and third, respectively.

Alexa Sandoval placed second in the shot put and 11th in the discus.

She set a personal record in the shot put.

Lilly Blevins placed third in the shot put and fifth in the discus.

She set personal records in both events.

Aliyah Strehl placed fourth in the triple jump and ninth in the long jump.

She set a personal record in the triple jump.

Jillian Mande placed eighth in the shot put and ninth in the discus.

Camila Padilla placed eighth in the 400, 15th in the 200 and 18th in the 100.

Monica Cendejas placed 10th in the triple jump.

Ayla Weldon placed 12th in the 400.

Jada Bryant placed 12th in the 200, 13th in the 100 hurdles and 14th in the long jump.

Megan Yorba placed 12th in the discus and 17th in the shot put.

Jelaine Esguerra placed 13th in the 200 and 15th in the 100.

Sandra Espinoza placed 14th in the 200 and 17th in the 100.

Julieta De la Cruz Ramirez placed 15th in the long jump.

Ceres High’s 4x100 relay team of Jelaine Esguerra, Ayla Weldon, Jayda Bryant and Sandra Espinoza placed fifth.

Ceres High’s 4x400 relay team of Esguerra, Weldon, Megan Yorba and Camila Padilla placed fifth.

The top four placers in each individual/relay event advanced to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV-V meet, to be staged today and Friday at Weston Ranch High School.

Ceres High’s junior-varsity boys posted a team score of 87 en route to a third-place finish at the WAC Finals.

Manny Mendoza took first in the 400 and 200, and third in the 100.

Jaiden Boss took first in the 300 hurdles and fourth in the 110 hurdles.

Von Tigner took second in the long jump and third in the triple jump.

Alexander Vas Dinis took second in the discus and fourth in the shot put.

Jesus Madrigal took third in the pole vault, eighth in the 300 hurdles, ninth in the shot put and 11th in the discus.

McCoy Adams took fourth in the pole vault.

Erick Valladares Ponce took fifth in the 800 and sixth in the 1,600.

Diego Ayala took eighth in the 800 and 15th in the 1,600.

Eduardo Garcia took ninth in the 3,200.

Kyle Phongsa took 10th in the 200 and 16th in the 100.

Simon Pezzoni took 11th in the 800 and 12th in the 1,600.

Joselin Ruiz took 16th in the 200 and 19th in the 100.

Natalie Soun took 19th in the 200.

Estrella Rodriguez took 20th in the 100.
