Central Valley’s boys volleyball team battled Pacheco, Grace Davis and Ceres High last week.

The Hawks improved to 5-19 overall and 3-9 in the Western Athletic Conference after spoiling Pacheco’s Senior Night with a 3-0 (27-25, 25-21, 25-21) win on Friday in Los Banos.

“Everybody contributed,” head coach Julio Madrigal said.

Central Valley turned in a dominant performance despite competing shorthanded.

Pablo Serafin missed the contest due to another commitment.

“We changed our formation a little bit,” Madrigal said. “The guys stepped up.”

Pacheco never recovered after losing the first set to Central Valley.

“It set the tone for the rest of the match,” Madrigal said. “It sucked all the energy from their gym.”

Central Valley lost 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-20) to visiting Grace Davis on Senior Night on April 15.

“It was our biggest crowd of the season,” Madrigal said. “We had staff, students and family there.”

Hawk upperclassmen Garrett Akiona, Nicolas Garcia, Pablo Serafin and Ricardo Roa Barragan were recognized before their final home match.

“They’ve put a lot of time and effort into the program,” Madrigal said. “They’re great athletes to have because they’re respectful, they’re coachable and they listen. They’re also great students.”

Central Valley suffered a 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-22) home loss while competing against crosstown-rival Ceres High on April 13.

“We didn’t do enough to win,” Madrigal said. “Credit to their coach and players. Defensively, we weren’t moving our feet consistently. Offensively, we could have used our middles more. I feel we have a mismatch there when we play other teams. We just have to take advantage.”

“My guys showed up to play that day,” Ceres High head coach Kelly Heese stated. “Great team work and effort on the court.”

The Hawks lost 3-0 to the Bulldogs (7-17, 5-7) on March 18 at Phil de la Porte Gymnasium.

Central Valley challenged Ceres High during the rematch.

“We were competitive this time,” Madrigal said. “Two out of the three sets, we were right there. That’s one of the ways to measure progress.”
