Seven days removed from claiming its second straight league title, Ceres High School’s boys soccer program closed out the Western Athletic Conference season with a 3-0 win over Grace Davis on Feb. 2 in Modesto.
Head coach Gilbert Zamora Jr. was critical of his team’s performance.
“My frustration was they knew we clinched and they weren’t playing as hard as they should have,” he said. “They didn’t take the game serious.”
The Bulldogs improved to 15-5-1 on the year.
Ceres High amassed a 12-1-1 record in the WAC standings.
“This is what I expected,” Zamora said. “But you can’t predict what’s going to happen.”
Isaac Arana, Luis Flores and Enrique Murillo all scored one goal against Grace Davis.
Daniel Cardenas, Gilbert Zamora III and Noah Zamora each collected one assist.
Alfredo Toledo made two saves at goalkeeper. Flores had one save.
The Bulldogs captured the WAC South title with an 8-1-1 mark last season. Playoffs were canceled for all sports during the 2020-21 school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Now, we have to worry about playoffs,” Zamora Jr. said. “We’re starting all over again. We have a great team this year. If we play as a team, we’re going to go far. Our goal is to win sections.”
