Dawgs win, Hawks lose in soccer

Ceres High's and Pacheco's varsity girls soccer teams battled to a 0-0 tie in the opening half of Thursday's Western Athletic Conference clash at Bulldog Stadium.

Down 1-0, Ceres High scored twice in an eight-minute span en route to rallying for a 2-1 victory over the Panthers.

"We played better in the second half," Bulldogs head coach Javier Mercado said. "We were relaxed."

Jacqueline Gonzalez collected one goal and one assist for Ceres High, which improved to 4-6-2 on the year and 1-2 in the Western Athletic Conference.

Laura Barajas had one goal.

Gisselle Madrigal chipped in with one assist.

Ceres High goalkeeper Dayana Delgado made six saves.

The Bulldogs fell behind 1-0 in the 47th minute.

"It was early," Mercado said. "I knew we'd come back and win. We kept our composure."

Ceres High evened the score in the 53rd minute.

Gonzalez finished from close-range off a pass from Madrigal.

Barajas broke a 1-1 tie seven minutes later.

Gonzalez delivered a pass from the right side. The ball rolled into the goal as Laura collided with Pacheco's keeper.

The Bulldogs shut down the Panthers the rest of the game.

CV girls fall twice
Central Valley High School's varsity girls soccer team lost twice by shutout in WAC play last week.

Livingston topped visiting Central Valley 2-0 on Thursday.

Hawk goalkeeper Alexandra Covarrubias had four saves in defeat.

Central Valley suffered a 4-0 loss at Patterson on March 12.

Covarrubias totaled nine saves for Central Valley (1-2).

Patterson and Livingston finished first and second, respectively, in the WAC standings during the 2011-12 school year.
