Ceres High School's varsity girls tennis team earned a split during the opening week of Western Athletic Conference play.

The Bulldogs dropped to 2-1 overall after losing 5-4 to defending WAC champion Los Banos on Thursday in Ceres.

"I'm not displeased," Ceres High head coach Jack Jacques said. "They're showing me a lot of heart. That's what we need. Los Banos is the defending league champion, a tennis factory. They have a strong coach."

The Bulldogs won all three doubles and one of six singles matches versus the Tigers.

"All of the girls fought hard," Jacques said.

Janet Jimenez defeated Marelee Garcia 7-5, 6-0 in No. 3 singles play.

Stephanie Garcia and Jolyce Vega defeated Adri Moreno and Kailyn Neves 4-6, 7-6 (2), 14-12 in No. 1 doubles play.

Andria Esho and Dominique Koeurn defeated L. Palazzo and B. Garcia 6-3, 6-3 in No. 2 doubles play.

Chelsea Heras and Sabrina Yang defeated Rachel Escobedo and Tatum Escobedo 6-4, 6-1 in No. 3 doubles play.

Angelica Slater lost 6-0, 7-5 to Amanda Marchese in No. 1 singles play.

Gabby Blandino lost 6-0, 6-0 to Shirley Liu in No. 2 singles play.

Bianca DeAnda lost 6-1, 6-0 to Melanie Silva in No. 4 singles play.

Justine Vega lost 6-1, 6-0 to Taylor Torongo in No. 5 singles play.

Julie Rosas lost 6-1, 6-4 to Stacia Teicheira in No. 6 singles play.

The Tigers built an insurmountable 5-2 lead.

Ceres High opened WAC play with an 8-1 victory over host Patterson on Sept. 9.

The Bulldogs swept all three doubles and five of six singles matches.

"Almost every single match was competitive," Jacques said. "They're a tough team. They're scrappy."

Slater defeated Ashley Afalla 6-3, 6-2 in No. 1 singles play.

Jimenez defeated Catarina Borges 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 in No. 3 singles play.

DeAnda defeated Kianna Garza 7-6 (5), 6-4 in No. 4 singles play.

Justine Vega defeated Antonia Perez 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in No. 5 singles play.

Rosas defeated Rebekah Miranda 6-1, 6-1 in No. 6 singles play.
Garcia and Jolyce Vega defeated Kitzia Gonzales and Dora Cantu 6-2, 6-0 in No. 1 doubles play.

Esho and Koeurn defeated Huma Aziz and Kiara Rios 6-1, 6-0 in No. 2 doubles play.
Heras and Jalani Blankenship won, 6-1, 6-1, in No. 3 doubles play.

Blandino lost 6-4, 6-1 to Avree Chairez in No. 2 singles play.

Hawks 7, Panthers 2
Central Valley High School's varsity girls tennis team opened the 2014 WAC campaign on Thursday in Los Banos.

The visiting Hawks won four of six singles and all three doubles matches en route to a 7-2 victory over Pacheco.

Emely Amaya defeated Irian Islas 6-1, 6-1 in No. 1 singles play.

Jadah Jackson defeated Aimee Wheeler 6-2, 6-4 in No. 3 singles play.

Teresa Diaz defeated Ruth Ramirez 6-2, 6-2 in No. 4 singles play.

Celest Lepe defeated Mariah Moreno 6-1, 6-2 in No. 5 singles play.

Naomi Torres lost 6-2, 7-5 to Perla Jimenez in No. 2 singles play.

Evelyn Andrade lost 7-5, 7-5 to Kayla Ayala in No. 6 singles play.

Princess Pe and Chelsea Flores defeated Leilani Cano and Maria Martinez 6-3, 6-1 in No. 1 doubles play.

Vanessa Monroy and Amy Nguyen defeated Chelsea Cano and Elizabeth De la Cruz 6-1, 6-1 in No. 2 doubles play.
