Gregori withstood Ceres High's comeback attempt-barely.

Brad Bussard, quarterback for the JV Bulldogs, just missed connecting with Daniel Raya on a potential game-winning 2-point conversion pass with less than two minutes left in regulation.

The Jaguars escaped with a 21-20 victory on Friday in Ceres.

"I'll make that call every time," Bulldogs head coach John Bussard said. "We weren't going to play for a tie."

Ceres High dropped to 1-1 on the year.

Gregori improved to 2-0 overall.

"We're only going to get better," coach Bussard said.

Brad Bussard passed for 248 yards and two touchdowns.

Juan Anderson totaled 141 yards and one TD on six receptions.

Merrik Price's lone catch resulted in an 11-yard score.

Ramon Coral tallied a team-high 11 tackles on defense.

Derek Avila and Brent Bussard each made six tackles.

Jorge Gonzalez registered five tackles.

Cesar Espinoza converted both of his point-after kicks.

Ceres High battled back from a 21-7 deficit in the second half.

Brent Bussard scored on a 1-yard run.

A wide-open Anderson hauled in a 15-yard TD pass from Brad Bussard with 1:38 to play.

Moments later, Brad Bussard looked Anderson's way before targeting Raya on what would have been a go-ahead 2-point conversion.

"The throw was there," John Bussard said. "Brad made the right read. Gregori made a good play."

The Jaguars recovered Ceres High's onside-kick attempt and ran the remaining 1:31 off the clock.

Several Bulldog players fought back tears following the heart-breaking loss.

"We fought hard the whole game," Brad Bussard said. "I'm proud of our guys. Our offensive line and receivers stepped up big time."
