Ceres High freshman Alick Liang held his own while competing in the Western Athletic Conference varsity boys tennis singles and doubles tournaments last week in Los Banos.

Alick advanced to the Final Four of the singles tourney.

Liang beat Los Banos' JT Barcellos 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 in the opening round. He overcame a 3-1 deficit in the third set.

"Alick did the same thing he's done all season," Ceres High head coach Bryan Harden said. "He battled."

Liang posted a 10-4 record this year.

Alick teamed up with sophomore Gurman Bains in doubles play.

Liang and Bains won three of four matches on their way to a second-place finish. The weather helped level the playing field.

"It was hilarious watching the matches," Harden said. "The kids were whiffing. The wind totally helped us."

Alick and Gurman lost 6-3, 6-1 to Central Catholic's John Fenton and Kent Naraghi in the finals.

Liang and Bains beat Livingston's Juan Moreno and Raj Singh (6-0, 6-0), Central Catholic's Alex Vient and Garrett Ardis (6-2, 7-5) and Central Catholic's Ross Fillipini and Craig Wade (6-0, 6-0).

"They played awesome," Harden said. "They did everything I asked them to do."

Bains finished in the top 8 of the singles tournament.

He beat Central Valley's Larry Hernandez 6-2, 6-4 in the opening round.

Gurman lost 6-0, 6-4 to Patterson's Javier Lagarde.

"He's got a few mental humps to get over," Harden said.

Bains had a 6-7 record this season.

Ceres High senior Matt Mey lost 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 to Vient.

Mey won 9 of 13 matches during his first season with the Bulldogs.

"He far exceeded my expectations for the year," Harden said.

Central Valley's Chan Chau lost 6-0, 6-1 to Phillipini.

Ceres High's Matt Mey and Bobby Bahia lost 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 to Patterson's Edgar Murillo and James Shugan in doubles play.

Bulldog teammates Nick Serratos and Esteban de la Torre lost 7-5, 6-1 to Phillipini and Wade.

Central Valley's Gerardo Cazares and Christian Villa lost 6-0, 6-1 to Vient and Ardis.

Max Perez and Samuel Martinez lost 6-0, 6-0 to Barcellos and Piero Pereda.

"The kids did the best they could," Hawks head coach Mike Rodriguez said. "I'm satisfied with that."
