The Ceres High JV boys basketball team edged Johansen 57-50 in Ceres on Jan. 7.

The Bulldogs cruised past the Vikings in Modesto on Saturday. Ceres scored 60 points in the first half of its 79-31 win over Johansen in Modesto Metro Conference play.

"We would have scored 100 points easily if they didn't go to a running clock in the second half," said Ceres coach Jim Pernetti.

"Things were clicking."

Four Bulldogs scored in double figures.

Freshman Brett Sayad led the way with a team-high 15 points, Steven Downs scored 13, and Adarsh Brar and Ricardo Castellanos both added 10 for Ceres, which improved to 6-1 in the MMC standings, 14-2 overall. The Davis Spartans have a one-game lead over over the Bulldogs in the league standings.

"If we keep playing that way, Davis is going to have their hands full," Pernetti said.

Sayad was aggressive.

"He attacked the basket," Pernetti said. "He rebounded.

"He wasn't complacent. He wasn't scared."

Neither were Brar and Castellanos. The sophomores provided support off the bench.

"Adarsh's post play has improved so much," Pernetti said. "And Ricardo was slashing and attacking the basket.

"If they score, it's a bonus."

Ceres led 60-18 at intermission.

The Bulldogs outscored the Vikings 31-5 in the first quarter. Downs, Sayad, Castellanos and Brar had 13, 11, eight and seven points, respectively, in the first half.

"I told the kids to put the ball in the basket and they did that," Pernetti said. "I told them to play defense and they did that."

Ceres' man-to-man and zone defenses were effective.

"Johansen was discombobulated," Pernetti said. "They didn't look like the same team."

Ceres shot 61 percent (19-for-31) from the free-throw line for the game, including 62 percent (18-for-29) in the first half.
