The Ceres Sizzle travel softball program had two teams claim titles at the End of Summer Classic last month.

The Sizzle’s newly-assembled 14-and-under team placed first in the Silver Division.

“All 13 girls (on the team) contributed,” head coach Joseph Reyes said.

Ceres compiled a 3-2 record at the tournament.

The Sizzle won both of their games in the Silver Bracket on Sept. 20 at Modesto Christian High School.

“We strategized better,” said Reyes, whose team lost two of three games in pool play on Sept. 19.

Ceres edged the East Bay Legends 8-7 in extra innings during the finals.

“I didn’t care if we won or lost,” Reyes said. “We were taking home hardware either way. For a lot of the girls, this is their first travel ball experience. I just wanted them to have fun.”

Down 7-6, the Sizzle tallied two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to complete the comeback victory.

Ceres evened the score at 6-6 when Val Martinez raced home from second base on Hailey Sainz’s double.

Sainz moved to third on Keirsten Bay’s hit and scored on Amelia Mendoza’s walk-off single.

“We were down most of the game,” Reyes said. “All of a sudden the momentum shifted. Everybody was hitting.”

Ceres defeated the Oakdale Wave 8-7 in the semifinals.

The Sizzle won one of three games in pool play during the first day of the tournament.

Ceres dropped its tourney opener 8-5 to the CenCal Stars (Fresno).

The Sizzle lost 7-5 to the CenCal Vixens (Turlock).

Ceres earned a 7-5 win against the Lady Venom (Hollister).

“Everybody got a chance to play,” Reyes said.

The Sizzle opened the fall season with a 2-2 showing at the Modesto Ball Bucket Bash, staged Sept. 12-13 at Rainbow Fields.

Ceres’ roster features 13 players, including Martinez, Sainz, Bay, Mendoza, Ava Canady, Emma Cordova, Jas Montes De Oca, Hayden Lockhart, Anna Martinez, Evelyn Reyes, Giuliana Valerio, Nikki Vierra and Saige Wyman.

Mendoza, Montes De Oca, Valerio, Vierra and Wyman are first-year travel ball participants.

“I’m still trying to get a feel where the girls play best,” coach Reyes said.

The Sizzle eight-and-under team took first in the Gold Division at Pedretti Fields in Turlock.

“It was our first tournament of the fall,” coach Joshua Yorba said. “Our expectation was to compete with every team and have fun doing it.”

Ceres collected four wins, no losses and one tie at the End of Summer Classic.

Bliss Arballo, Gianna Espindola, Priscilla Galvan, Avery Kay Wade, Aalina Manrique, Analeia Montes, Hilena Morales, MayaRose Romero, Shelby Travao, Kitana Valencia, Aria Wheeler and Abrielle Yorba all contributed.

Espindola, Manrique and Wade are second-year players.

Arballo, Galvan, Montes, Morales, Romero, Travao, Valencia, Wheeler and Abrielle Yorba are newcomers.

“The girls did awesome,” coach Yorba said. I’m proud of them.”

The Sizzle coasted to an 11-1 win over Crucial in the championship game on Sept. 20.

“It’s a great feeling winning our first tournament,” Joshua Yorba said. “Our batting was on point. Our pitching and defense was great. We did everything right.”

Morales had four strikeouts at pitcher.

“She was locked in,” coach Yorba said.

Ceres totaled 13 hits in three innings.

Wade batted 2-for-2 with one double, three RBIs and two runs.

Espindola batted 2-for-2 with one double, two RBIs and two runs.

Manrique batted 2-for-2 with two doubles, two RBIs and one run.

Abrielle Yorba batted 2-for-2 with one double, one RBI and two runs.

The Sizzle scored five runs on five hits in the second inning.

Ceres shut out Bases Academy 9-0 in the semifinals.

The two teams tied 5-5 in the quarterfinals.

Ceres won and tied once in pool play on Sept. 19.

The Sizzle opened the tournament with a 6-1 victory over Mid Valley Elite.

Ceres and Crucial battled to a 6-6 tie.

“The second day of the tournament, we turned it on,” Joshua Yorba said. “The girls started playing how they’ve been practicing. They did everything right. There was no uncertainty.”
