• We can't afford more taxes
In 2009 California's Democrat legislators asked California voters to approve tax and license fee increases for two years. In return we were promised they would get our financial house in order by dealing with the debt, deficit and entitlement spending and deliver a balanced budget on time. Instead the increased revenues were used to pay for raises across the board and more entitlement spending and paybacks to the special-interests groups that promoted the tax increase legislation to begin with. In other words, it was back to business as usual.
Fast forward to today and now with the additional clout of a Democrat governor, they want to extend these taxes another five years and they're making the same promises they failed to keep two years ago. They believe California voters are stupid enough to fall for this trick again. Sad but true, they're probably right. We already had a vote on these tax increases and lawmakers were given two years and billions of dollars to fix the mess they created. They hardly even tried. We don't need another vote. No tax extensions and no new taxes.
• Valley Pizza Zone serves great food
I would like to sound off about a lovely place we went for lunch one day. It is called Valley Pizza Zone (3100 E. Service Road, Suite 100-B) and it is excellent pizza. It is one of the best we have eaten in years and I would just love for everything to try it once. You would find out how good the place is good. It is tremendous.
I think it's important that we support our food places here in Ceres.
• Who do we blame then?
I'm calling in response to Sound Off! Someone called in about not scapegoating people for the Latina who blamed Latinos for the trashing of Ceres. I've so desperately, for years, wanted someone to answer the question. Why was Ceres such a quiet little country town where everybody was good neighbors? Now you have gang graffiti on the sidewalks, more crime, my car's been busted into at least six times. I'm surrounded by Latinos so if we can't blame the people who are here now causing the problem, who can we blame? How do you answer that Ceres has changed so drastically?
To the politicians who only adjust their thinking to the major markets, that being the Latinos, you're to blame also.
I used to be proud of my town. Now not so much any more. And, yes, as soon as I have the opportunity, I'll be leaving too.
Thank you for printing these comments and the comments of other people who speak the truth and usually the people who argue against it are the people who are doing it. Not to blame all the Latinos but I'm sorry, I've witnessed it myself. Ceres is becoming east L.A.
• Saw trashy areas in Mexico
I like to read all of your columns and I must make a comment about something Art deWerk said in his recent column. He was talking about how being poor doesn't mean that a person or people have to be trashy. He said something curious about visiting poor places in Mexico that were neat and clean.
Let me preface what I am about to say. I love people - all people. I have been on at least nine mission trips to Mexico and we have seen first-hand that some of the poorest places around the Tecate area are trashed beyond our belief. Those people dump wherever they like and one community was so bad I could not believe the trash. I have always thought we are seeing trash because immigrants are only doing what they did in their home country.
Sad truth.
• Benziger is a menace to society
Jeff Benziger, I see that you have joined the recent, shameless Latino immigrant bashing bandwagon.
Regarding the article you wrote for the June 29 edition of The Ceres Courier ("America is being robbed of allegiance") you are so full of crap. I understand your need to sell newspapers. You seem to write about crap that your kinfolk want to hear and thrive on - bigoted rhetoric.
Clowns like you are the real growing menace to society. Violent hate crimes against Latinos have increased partly due to the vile, hate speech that trash like you promote. Try using your talents for something positive.
Spanish language has been here for a long time and if you don't like to hear it spoken you can pack your bags and move north.
I have a joke for you, What is brown and full of holes? Swiss ---.

• Let Boomers come into old Walmart
It seems to me that this city needs a place for the youth to go, have fun, be safe and just hang out. I would think that the old Walmart building could be sold or leased to a company like Boomers or such. That they would build a place where our kids could go and have something to do besides just get into trouble because of being bored.
This would be a twofold advantage. We would get our new and bigger Walmart which will add in tax revenue for the city. Also the new business at the old Walmart building would also add in tax revenue to the city.
Best of all it gives our kids a safe place to go. A place to go that gets them off the streets and I would think in less trouble.
• Obama's many accomplishments listed
I want to mention all of the things that Obama has done that are good. I will start with maintaining the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Obama is destroying the Democratic Party before our eyes! Dennis Moore had never lost a race; he quit. Evan Bayh had never lost a race; he quit. Byron Dorgan had never lost a race and he quit. Harry Reid almost didn't make his bid for re-election. By the end of 2011 dozens more will be!
In December of 2008 the Democrats were on the rise. In the last two election cycles they had picked up 14 Senate seats and 52 House seats. The press was touting the death of the Conservative movement and the Republican Party. In one year Obama put a stop to all of this.
He has completely exposed liberals and progressives for what they are. Liberals tax, borrow and spend. Liberals won't bring themselves to protect America. Liberals want to take over the economy. Liberals think they know what is best for everyone. Liberals aren't happy till they are running YOUR life.
