Arrest made in 2009 deadly robbery attempt

A Merced man turned himself into authorities on Oct. 28 for his role in the Dec. 4, 2009 fatal robbery attempt at a South Modesto convenience store.

Mark Burgess, 24, of Merced, turned himself into Merced Police Department regarding the 2009 homicide. Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office detectives were able to link Burgess to the homicide.

As detectives continued to work the case over the weekend they developed information on a second suspect Ernesto Morales Jr., 22, also of Merced.

Harinder Sanghera, 28, of Ceres, was shot and killed in the 3 p.m. robbery of Gas N Shop, 837 S. Ninth Street in Modesto. The robbers did not get away with any cash in the botched robbery.
