A Salida man was killed in a crash into a tree in front of Summit Charter Academy at 2008 E. Hatch Road early Friday morning.

Ceres Police are unsure what caused the 1:43 a.m. collision that took the life of Joseph Daniel Bunch, 42. Officer John King said that Bunch was westbound on Hatch Road in a gold1989 Nissan 240 SX and went through the intersection of Hatch and Central and then veering into the eastbound lanes in front of the school, striking the curb and hitting the mature tree. Bunch appeared to have suffered major trauma to his chest as evidenced by the deformed steering wheel. Bunch, the only person in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

King said he's unsure if anyone saw the crash but would like to talk to anyone who might have seen him in his car prior to the crash or who was with Bunch before the accident. Persons who can help with the investigation should call Officer King at 538-5678.
