An Escalon area auto crash claimed the life of a Ceres teenager and inflicted major injuries on two other passengers riding with her on Tuesday, June 19.

The dead woman was identified as Jessica Ochoa, 19, of Ceres.

The crash occurred when a car filled with young Ceres residents made a sudden turn into the path of an oncoming Nissan on River Road just west of McHenry Avenue. Serafin Ruiz, 60, of Riverbank, the driver of the eastbound Nissan, escaped with only minor injuries but the death and major injuries were experienced in Pontiac carrying the Ceres residents.

The right front of the Pontiac was struck as driver John Silveria, 22, of Ceres, attempted to pull a fast turn into the entrance of the McHenry Avenue Recreation Area along the Stanislaus River.

Silveria sustained minor injuries while Ochoa, riding in the right front passenger seat, suffered major injuries and later died at a Modesto hospital. Back seat passengers Daniel Simpers, 23, and Michael Flores, 21, both of Ceres, were hospitalized with major injuries.

Megan Purkin, 18, who was sitting in the center of the rear seat, suffered minor injuries.
