Crosstown-rivals Central Valley and Ceres High faced off in nine varsity sports this spring.
The Hawks narrowly won the overall win-loss battle versus the Bulldogs.
Central Valley had a combined record of 7-6 versus Ceres High.
Central Valley enjoyed success in baseball, stunt cheer, girls swimming and boys golf.
The Bulldogs experienced success in boys volleyball, boys track and field, girls track and field and boys swimming.
Ceres High and Central Valley both earned bragging rights in softball.
BASEBALL
Central Valley bested Ceres High twice on its way to winning its second consecutive Western Athletic Conference title.
The first-place Hawks (14-0) topped the fourth-place Bulldogs (9-5) 12-3 on April 23 at Art McRae Field.
Central Valley pitcher Noah Maldonado gave up three runs and four hits with eight strikeouts and six walks in five innings.
The Hawks collected 12 hits on offense.
Maldonado batted 1-for-3 with one triple, two RBIs and one run.
Mason Whitworth batted 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs.
Fernando Dominguez batted 1-for-4 with one double, one RBI and two runs.
Ezequiel Verduzco batted 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run.
The Bulldogs collected six hits.
Central Valley shut out visiting Ceres High 13-0 on April 22.
The Hawks totaled 11 hits.
Verduzco batted 3-for-3 with one double, three RBIs and two runs.
Isaias Valdovinos batted 2-for-4 with one double, two RBIs and three runs.
Adrian Vega batted 2-for-2 with three RBIs and one run.
Whitworth batted 1-for-3 with one RBI and two runs.
Central Valley starting pitcher Tyson Hunt gave up no runs and just one hit with three strikeouts and one walk in four innings.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Fourth-place Ceres High (6-8) earned a two-match sweep of seventh-place Central Valley (3-11).
The Bulldogs cruised to a 3-0 road victory over the Hawks on April 13.
Host Ceres High defeated Central Valley 3-0 on March 18 at Phil de la Porte Gymnasium.
STUNT CHEER
Central Valley continued its run of dominance versus Ceres High.
The Hawks prevailed twice against the Bulldogs en route to claiming their second straight league title.
First-place Central Valley (12-0) posted a 27-16 win over fifth-place Ceres High (4-8) on April 20 at Phil de la Porte Gymnasium.
The Hawks thrilled their home fans with a 31-8 win against the Bulldogs on April 16.
Central Valley improved its head-to-head record versus Ceres High to 5-0 since both schools field stunt cheer teams for the first time in 2023.
BOYS TRACK & FIELD
Western Athletic Conference-champion Ceres High (7-0) rolled to a 109-31 win against sixth-place Central Valley (2-5) on April 22 at CUSD Stadium.
The Bulldogs had a host of contributors versus the Hawks.
Cashton Almeida finished first in the 400 and high jump.
Sergio Torres finished first in the 800.
Josiah Martinez finished first in the pole vault, long jump and triple jump, and third in the high jump.
David Rodriguez-Ochoa finished first in the 110 hurdles, second in the 300 hurdles and sixth in the discus.
Anthony Santillan finished first in the 100 and 200, and third in the long jump.
Jayden Jaimes finished first in the 3,200 and third in the 1,600.
Sam Nieto finished first in the shot put and fourth in the discus.
Saragun Singh finished first in the discus and ninth in the shot put.
Central Valley’s Frankie Klino, Steve Duran, Erntesto Martinez, Julian Contreras, Blake Silva, Daniel Leon , Emmanuel Barajas, Massimo Catalano and Diego Garcia turned in standout performances against Ceres High.
Klino finished first in the 1,600.
Duran finished first in the 300 hurdles, sixth in the long jump and seventh in the 400.
Martinez finished second in the 400.
Contreras finished second in the discus.
Silva finished second in the high jump and fourth in the 300 hurdles.
Leon finished second in the 200 and fifth in the 400.
Barajas finished second in the 3,200, fourth in the 800 and sixth in the 1,600.
Catalano finished second in the 100 and eighth in the 200.
Diego Garcia finished second in the long jump and eighth in the 400.
GIRLS TRACK & FIELD
Ceres High turned in a dominant performance while coasting to a 92-39 victory over Central Valley on April 22 at CUSD Stadium.
Jayden Garcia, Brooke Kiser, Clarissa Rivera, Isabella Sabala, Martina Meglioli, Marissa Pacheco and Sovannary Carter led Ceres High.
Garcia finished first in the 400, 300 hurdles and 100 hurdles.
Kiser finished first in the 100 and 200.
Rivera finished first in the 800 and 1,600.
Sabala finished first in the 3,200 and second in the 1,600.
Meglioli finished first in the high jump, second in the discus and third in the shot put.
Pacheco finished first in the pole vault, second in the 3,200, third in the 1,600 and sixth in the 800.
Carter finished first in the long jump and triple jump, and seventh in the 100.
Lilyanna Madrigal, Karla Sarabia, Airiena Martinez, Camila Urena, Kassandra Torres and Ayleen Apreza led Central Valley.
Madrigal finished first in the shot put and discus.
Sarabia finished second in the long jump and triple jump.
Martinez finished second in the 100.
Urena finished second in the 400 and third in the 800.
Torres finished second in the 200 and third in the 100.
Apreza finished second in the 800, third in the 400 and seventh in the 200.
Ceres High (3-4) and Central Valley (3-4) tied for fourth place in the WAC dual standings.
BOYS SWIMMING
Sixth-place Ceres High (2-5) prevailed 56-47 while battling last-place Central Valley (0-7) on the road on April 17.
Jaxon Merrill, Jose Carranza, Julian Ramirez and Daniel Tubera led the Bulldogs.
Merrill took first in the 200 IM and 100 fly.
Carranza took first in the 100 back and second in the 100 free.
Ramirez took first in the 200 free and third in the 100 free.
Tubera took first in the 100 breast and third in the 50 free.
Ezekiel Castorena, Ari Luman, Isaiah Shirley and Julian Bustillos and David Vasquez led the Hawks.
Castorena took first in the 50 free and 500 free.
Luman took first in the 100 free.
Shirley took second in the 200 free and 100 fly.
Bustillos took second in the 100 breast and 50 free.
GIRLS SWIMMING
Fourth-place Central Valley (4-3) outscored seventh-place Ceres High (1-6) at home on April 17.
Zhaira Brar, Kamyla Loza, Joellene Roton, Alaney Gonzalez, Natalie Southavongsa and Andrea Alcantar led the Hawks.
Brar took first in the 200 IM and 100 free.
Loza took first in the 50 free and second in the 100 free.
Roton took first in the 100 back and second in the 200 free.
Gonzalez took first in the 100 fly and third in the 100 breast.
Southavongsa took second in the 500 free and 100 back.
Alcantar took second in the 100 fly and fourth in the 100 breast.
Jessica Blevins, Alana Festa, Evelynn Tubera and Heaven Vasquez led the Bulldogs.
Blevins took first in the 200 free and 500 free.
Festa took first in the 100 breast.
Tubera took second in the 50 free.
Vasquez took second in the 100 breast and third in the 500 free.
BOYS GOLF
Central Valley edged Central Valley by 10 strokes at the Western Athletic Conference Championships on April 27 at Rancho Del Rey Golf Club in Atwater.
The Hawks and Bulldogs finished third and fourth, respectively, in the team standings.
Cristian Bossard led Central Valley with an 80.
Hawk teammates Adolfo Diaz and Ayden Whitworth both shot 92.
William Montez and Aayden Vang rounded out Central Valley’s scorecard with rounds of 98 and 99.
Isaac Gonzalez led Ceres High with an 80.
Bulldog teammates Cooper Perez, Alexander Ortega, Zuriel Harold and Jayson Trevino shot 93, 97, 100 and 101, respectively.
SOFTBALL
Ceres High and Central Valley split their two-game series.
The Bulldogs exacted revenge and captured their third straight Western Athletic Conference crown with a 9-8 home win over the Hawks on May 6.
Courtesy-runner Sophia Alcarez scored from third base on a passed ball in the bottom of the ninth inning, setting off a wild celebration near home plate.
Ceres High’s Lizzie Figueroa pitched a complete game.
Figueroa surrendered six earned runs and 14 hits with three strikeouts and three walks in nine innings.
Figueroa also helped her own cause by batting 2-for-5 on offense with one RBI.
Bella Bravo batted 3-for-3 with three doubles, one RBI and three runs.
Briona Bravo batted 2-for-4 with one double, two RBIs and two runs.
Central Valley relied on both of its pitcher during the rivalry game, including Gabriela Delatorre and Brooklynn Steeley.
Delatorre allowed two earned runs and three hits with no strikeouts and two walks in 32/3 innings.
Steeley yielded seven runs and nine hits with one strikeout and two walks in five innings.
Steeley and Delatorre also contributed on offense.
Steeley batted 3-for-5 with one double and three RBIs.
Delatorre batted 3-for-5 with one double, one RBI and two runs.
Abigail Krauss batted 2-for-4 with one double, one RBI and one run.
Central Valley earned just its second win versus Ceres High when the two teams faced off on April 15.
The host Hawks held on for a 3-2 victory over the Bulldogs.
Steeley pitched a complete game against Ceres High.
She surrendered just one earned run and nine hits with two strikeouts and two walks in seven innings.
Steeley accounted for one of Central Valley’s five hits. She singled and plated one run.
