INTOXICATED DRIVER NEARLY CLIPS PATROL CAR: CERES - A Ceres police officer was nearly run off the road on Monday, Oct. 22 by an alleged drunk driver who veered into his lane.

Officer James Riley was patrolling on northbound Herndon Road at 8:30 p.m. Herndon Road north of Richard Way when he had to swerve out of the way of a 2002 Chevy Camaro being driven by Pattie Haro, 55, of Ceres. Haro was driving southbound but in the northbound lane, said Lt. Brent Smith.

Haro was arrested on the charge of driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

It was Riley's 34th DUI arrest of the year.

THEFT OF CAMERA ENDS IN ARREST: CERES - A security guard at Five Star Auto Sales watched a man pry a surveillance camera from the side of the neighboring Midway Club and reported it to police. Armed with a description of the suspect, officers quickly responded at 11:10 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 22, and stopped Robert Lopez, 44, of Ceres, a short distance away. He was in possession of the camera and a pry bar in his backpack. Lopez was arrested and charged with theft and possession of burglary tools.

MITCHELL ROAD SUBWAY ROBBED: CERES - Two men robbed the Subway shop at 2600 Mitchell Road and got away with a small amount of cash.

The armed robbery happened at 5:53 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, when two men described as Latino and black males wearing hoodies, walked in with one brandishing a black semi-automatic handgun. They stole cash from the register, $7 from a patron and a cell phone from one of the employees. They then exited through the back door.

Police Lt. Brent Smith said the robbers appeared to be in their 20s.

STUCK DRIVER ARRESTED FOR DUI: CERES - A Modesto man was arrested for drunken driving on Tuesday, Oct. 23 after he crashed his 1995 Chevy Silverado pickup which was hung up in the center median while driving northbound on Crowslanding Road.

Officer Chris Melton investigated the 9:38 p.m. crash and found Robert Rider, 35, of Modesto, was under the influence of prescription medication and alcoholic beverages. He was taken to Doctors Medical Center for a blood sample.

Rider had been arrested by the California Highway Patrol on Oct. 4 for driving under the influence of prescription medication.

The arrest was Melton's 40th DUI arrest of the year.

STORE THEFT STAGED: CERES - Suspects broke the front glass of Liquor King, 3240 Mitchell Road, on Wednesday, Oct. 24 and made off with Lottery tickets and cigarettes before fleeing. The store's alarm went off at 4 a.m. which alerted police.

DRUG ARREST MADE: CERES - A search warrant executed at 11:45 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27 resulted in the arrest of a woman who was found with three pounds of marijuana, two ounces of heroin, and a gram of methamphetamine.

Kimberly Johnston, 29, of Modesto, was arrested and charged with possession of controlled substances.

The warrant was served at 836 Anthony Ave., in south Modesto.

SHOTS FIRED IN PARK: CERES - One man was arrested after police descended on Riverview Park on Canyon Drive following reports of a gunshot and a gang fight early Monday.

An officer in the area heard a shot at 12:11 a.m. and followed up on a call about a fight in the park. Youth were scattering as police arrived but officer James Riley chased down and apprehended Daniel Rios, 19, of Keyes, on Riverette Court. He was taken back to his car, which yielded nine ecstacy pills and ground ecstacy powder. Rios also had a warrant for his arrest. He received charges of possession of a controlled substance, and obstructing or delaying an officer.

Two runaway juveniles were cited for curfew violations.
