BURGLARY SUSPECT NABBED: CERES - Numerous calls from the public enabled Ceres police to arrest a 24-year-old Turlock man Saturday, May 31, caught in the act of breaking into a residence. Eric Black was charged with committing a residential burglary.

A neighbor in the 2700 block of Standford Avenue called 9-1-1 at 6:41 p.m. after hearing glass break at a nearby house and seeing a suspect running westbound on Stanford. Officers set up a perimeter in an attempt to find the suspect. Officer Joe Wren and his police canine, Axel, tracked the suspect to the area of North and Sixth streets. At about the same time a Fifth Street resident called to report a man hiding in a backyard. A citizen chased Black out of the yard with a pitchfork, said Deputy Chief of Police Mike Borges.

"Citizens helped out big time," said Borges. "We couldn't have done it without their assistance that's for sure. That's what we always advocate - citizen involvement."

Two others in the car were released.

Green ran his vehicle, said Borges, into a parked car, which set a chain reaction collision into a boat trailer, mobilehome steps and a shed. He then allegedly ran the car a second time into the mobilehome knocking it off its blocks.

The incident occurred in the 2900 block of Don Pedro at 3:09 a.m. on June 5.

The driver, who fled from the 8:58 p.m. crash, is being sought by police. Also fleeing were other occupants of the car. One remained: a boy who earlier in the evening received his Ceres High School diploma. He was not arrested.

Police did arrest passenger Gurpreet Singh, who just turned 18 that day, for public drunkenness.

Deputy Police Chief Mike Borges said the driver was driving recklessly and tried to make a left turn from southbound Tenth onto eastbound Don Pedro. He went through a front yard, barely missing a house but striking a fence in the neighboring yard.

"We will be following up with the registered owner," said Borges.
