A hospital report of a badly injured five-week-old baby has prompted Ceres police to launch an investigation into a possible case of child abuse.

The Ceres baby was taken to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto Sunday evening with a broken arm, six broken ribs, a skull fracture and a broken collar bone. At 10:12 p.m. suspicious hospital staff members called Ceres Police to report the severe injuries.

The parents of the child, who live in the 3400 block of Georgeanne Place, denied any knowledge of the injuries, said Sgt. Jose Berber. The investigating officer met with Child Protective Services which took custody of the baby while a one-year-old sibling, who showed no signs of injury, was placed in the care of a relative as the case is being investigated.

The baby was flown to Oakland Children's Hospital for treatment of the broken bones.

An investigation is being determined to identify how the injuries were caused. Anyone with information on the parents should contact Ceres Police Detectives at 538-5727.
