HUGHSON - Three pedestrians, including an five-year-old student, were injured when an elderly motorist accidentally accelerated into them while making a turn in the parking lot of Hughson Elementary School on Tuesday morning.

The accident occurred at 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot east of the multi-purpose room of the school, located at 7201 E. Whitmore Avenue.

According to Sheriff's Department spokesman Sgt. Keith Rakoncza, all four persons sustained moderate injuries, including the driver of the silver Honda passenger car. The driver lost control and lunged toward the boy and his grandfather and struck them before smashing into a crash post. The impact knocked the boy and grandfather to the ground with a third person, a woman, being knocked over by the grandfather.

The boy was rushed by Medi-Flight air ambulance to a local hospital as a precautionary measure, said Rakoncza. The two adult pedestrians and the driver all were treated at local hospitals.

"None of the injuries appear to be life-threatening at this time," said Sgt. Rakoncza.

The crash is under investigation with no official cause but those at the school speculate that the driver hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. He said alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a contributing cause.

School officials would not comment on the accident.
