Sheriff's Department officials have ruled the Friday death of a toddler at a Keyes day-care an accident.

Authorities believe that Landen Chabida, a 10-month-old baby from Turlock, was struck by a small bookcase that fell on him while in the care of the Aunt Cindy's Day-Care in the 5100 block of Monroe Way in Keyes. The female caregiver found the baby not breathing and administered CPR on the baby while talking to emergency dispatchers on the phone. The infant died enroute to the hospital.

The death is still being investigated and an autopsy was performed yesterday.

Sheriff's Department spokesman Rajinder Singh said his department was called at 3:06 p.m. as a "baby not breathing" call. When authorities arrived they found the day-care provider performing CPR on the child.

"They believe the baby was sleeping on the floor and another nine-month-old was in the crib next to him," said Singh. "There was a small book shelf in the room. They think the nine-month-old started crawling and started standing himself up and believe he possibly used the book shelf to pull himself up and fell, possibly on him.

"We believe it's going to be just a tragic accident."
