A 45-year-old Keyes man was killed Monday evening in an accident on a rural road north of Modesto.

The victim, Remigio Gurrola, was driving a 2004 Kia westbound on Ladd Road west of Tully Road when for some unknown reason he allowed the car to drift off the road. Gurrola overcorrected to the left, the California Highway Patrol noted, and the car traveled across both lanes and collided into several almond trees before flipping over several times before coming to rest. Gurrola was killed instantly.

His passenger, Elvira Juarez, 47, of Keyes, sustained major injuries and was rushed to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.

The cause of the 9:14 p.m. crash remains under investigation. Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors, the CHP noted.
