A 17-year-old Ceres boy sustained significant injuries when he was struck by a larger vehicle as he rode a homemade motor scooter in the dark on Sunday evening.

The victim was rushed by ambulance to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto and is reportedly in stable condition.

The crash occurred at 11:36 p.m. at Hackett and Morgan roads in southwest Ceres. Police Lt. Brent Smith said the boy was traveling westbound on Hackett Road at a high rate of speed without headlights and did not even slow down for the stop sign at Morgan Road. He was struck by a southbound Ford Expedition whose driver did not have enough time to react.

The driver of the Ford, Angel Lara, 47, of Ceres, was himself unlicensed and he was cited for driving without a license.
