Mitchell crash
A 59-year-old man was critically injured Wednesday afternoon when he was struck by this Chevy Suburban while riding his bicycle across traffic north of Hatch Road.

A 59-year-old man was struck by an SUV and sustained life threatening injuries Wednesday afternoon while riding his bicycle on Mitchell Road north of Hatch Road.

The name of the victim was not released.

The crash was reported at approximately 3:03 p.m.

The Ceres Police Department is investigating the crash but it's believed the bicyclist was peddling his bicycle across Mitchell Road in an eastbound direction from Adrien Way, over the center median, where he was struck by a northbound Chevy Suburban. The man's body crumpled the front of the SUV.

When police arrived the victim was suffering from major injuries and officers immediately rendered aid until Modesto Fire personnel and paramedics from American Medical Response arrived and took over. The man was transported to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition.

The driver of the Chevy Suburban remained on scene and cooperated with investigators.

Alcohol impairment was not a factor, they say.

Mitchell Road between Hatch Road and Adrien Way remained closed for several hours while officers from the Ceres Police Traffic Unit Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded and processed the accident scene
