Four occupants of a car escaped serious injury Monday afternoon when the driver lost control on Hatch Road and it ended up in an empty canal.

The car, a 2000 Ford Crown Victoria, sustained major damage in the 2:50 p.m. crash.

Witnesses said the driver, Martha Perez, 25, of Ceres, had pulled onto eastbound Hatch Road from the Walmart parking lot and got up to over 50 mph. Perez allowed the car to veer to the left into the westbound lanes but overcorrected, sending the car up the canal embankment. The car became airborne and landed in the bottom of the canal where it came to a slide.

Only one occupant reported slight injuries. The riders were aged 26, 37 and 44.
