Ceres man dies on railroad tracks in Modesto

A Ceres resident died Friday evening when he was struck and killed by a northbound train just beneath the Kansas Avenue overpass.

Authorities have not concluded why Anthony Lugo, in his 40s, was on the tracks. At 6:30 p.m. near Eighth Street. A witness told Modesto Police that they saw Lugo on the Union Pacific railroad tracks.

Modesto Police Department spokesman Sgt. Brian Kleiber said the witnesses looked in Lugo's direction when the train horn blew just in time to see his body flying.

After the fatal impact the train was halted and its back end blocked traffic at L Street.
