A Ceres man sustained major injuries when he crashed in eastern Stanislaus County Thursday evening.

The California Highway Patrol said that alcohol or drugs appear to be a contributing factor in the crash of Chaz Allen Janes, 29, of Ceres, on Lake Road east of Roberts Ferry Road. Janes was driving his 1992 Chevy westbound on Lake Road and failed to negotiate a curve in the road. Janes' vehicle went off the road in a northwest direction and plunged down an embankment, through a barbed wire fence and head on into a hillside. Because he was not wearing his seatbelt, his body slammed around inside the inside the passenger compartment, causing major injuries.

Janes was transported to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.
