She called 911 after crashing into the California Aqueduct to say her car was sinking, but emergency personnel could not get to Ani Shamamian of Ceres fast enough to save her life on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 1.

California Highway Patrol investigators are looking into why Shamamian, a 54-year-old Ceres woman veered off Howard Road approximately 600 feet from the large canal and shot through a fence, over a berm and into the water. Authorities rushed to the scene but there was no sign of the submerged Toyota. An employee of Stanislaus Towing Service used a sonar-equipped remote controlled boat to find the car under 30 feet of water with a deceased Shamamian inside. The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department dive team made the recovery at around 2 p.m. after the California Department of Water Resources responded to a request to slow the flow of water.
