Ten students from Central Valley High School and Ceres High School are the recipients of business and agriculture scholarships from the Ceres Chamber of Commerce.

This year, Central Valley students Marian Diaz, Hallie Magarite Donart, Ernest Cuevas and Esteban Villafan each will receive a $500 agriculture scholarship.

Josefina Rubino, Emily Rivas and Amanda Jauregui from Central Valley High and Eva Avila, Carlos Moreno and Gema Peralta from Ceres High School each will receive a $250 business scholarship.

Each year, the Chamber's ag and business scholarship committees review many applications and select high school recipients based on grades, contributions to ag- and business-related activities in and after school, and aspirations of upper education and career direction.

"Throughout the year, the Chamber works hard to host events and activities to raise money to provide these scholarships. We couldn't achieve this effort without the continued support of our members and the Ceres community," said Beth Hunt, chair of the Ceres Chamber of Commerce Events Committee.

Among some of the events that help benefit the Chamber's scholarship program is the annual Agribusiness Awards Luncheon, slated for next Thursday, May 29th at the Ceres Community Center. Tickets for the event are $20 and $25 after May 25. Tickets will not be sold at the door.

Additionally, the Ceres Chamber is hosting its first annual BBQ Challenge & Music Festival, entitled "Smoke on the River," which is scheduled for Saturday, August 23 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Chamber is teaming with the Tuolumne River Lodge to hold that event. The proceeds will be split between the two entities to benefit many of the Chamber's community programs and raise money to help the Tuolumne River Lodge make improvements to its Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Tickets for the barbecue are now on sale and may be purchased at the Chamber office, 2938-A 4th Street in downtown Ceres or through the Tuolumne River Lodge. For more information about this please call the Chamber office at 537-2601.
