CHP: motorcyclist caused fatal crash
CHP investigation Keyes

The California Highway Patrol’s investigation into Tuesday’s deadly Highway 99 crash in Keyes concluded that the victim caused the collision.

Killed in the 7:52 a.m. crash was Ireland Rolon, 24, of rural Hughson.

According to the CHP, Rolon was riding a 2023 Kawasaki motorcycle and “splitting” the northbound lanes of the freeway at a high rate of speed. Rolon then collided with the right front side of a 2010 Kia Soul driven by Arriana Martin, 40, of Merced. That impact propelled Rolon and the motorcycle forward and collided into the back of a 2015 Ford Fusion driven by 23-year-old Turlock driver Clara Buck. Rolon hit the freeway with fatal injuries.

This collision is pending further investigation. The CHP said it has not determined if drugs or alcohol were a factor.

The crash blocked all lanes and backed up traffic for miles but vehicles managed to divert around the scene by going off to the right side.
