A sergeant with the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department and a Modesto baker were killed Friday evening in a head-on collision in Hughson.

The deceased were identified as Sgt. Jeremy Fielder, 43, of Hilmar and Vanessa Zamora, 33, of Modesto.

The crash investigation by the California Highway patrol indicates Zamora allowed her vehicle to veer into the other lane, striking the off-duty sergeant's car.

The collision occurred around 8 p.m. Friday on Santa Fe Avenue, south of Leedom Road in Hughson.

Zamora was driving a 1996 Honda Accord northbound on Santa Fe, while Fielder was driving a 2004 Honda CRV southbound on Santa Fe. The two cars were approaching each other at undetermined speeds, when for an unknown reason, Zamora allowed her vehicle to drift to the left into the other lane, striking Fielder's vehicle, according to the CHP.

The CHP stated they had not yet determined if alcohol or distracted driving played a factor in the collision.

The impact of the collision caused fatal injuries for both Zamora and Fielder and they were both pronounced deceased at the scene. Fielder's wife, Lora Fielder, 44, was a passenger in his vehicle and sustained major injuries from the collision. She was transported to Memorial Medical Center.

Fielder was a 20-year veteran with the Sheriff's Department and was studying to become a nurse. At the news of his death, the department released a statement on their Facebook page, stating "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sergeant Fielder's family, friends, and the men and women of the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department."
